Kass, János Moses

Kass, János: Moses
Private collection Hungary

Description

János Kass obtained a master's degree in ceramics in 1946 and then studied at the College of Applied and Fine Arts, where he was taught by Gyula Hincz, György Konecsni and Jenő Kádár.
He gained popularity as one of the busiest book illustrators. He created fine-line drawings for many children's and youth books (János Arany: Toldi, Ferenc Móra: The Trembling King, Mark Twain: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer).
But he also worked on many stamp designs and sculptures. He captured the face of the best-known biblical figure with his terracotta sculpture entitled "Moses". The great prophet of Judaism, Christianity and Islam is depicted in art history with curly curls and a long, curled beard. Kass made no exception when composing his small sculptures. The tiny pits and engravings of both the crown of the hair and the facial hair faithfully reflect the image of Moses created by artists over time. De Kass's work mostly follows the frontality of Egyptian sculpture with almond-shaped eyes and a long, straight nose. It emphasizes the main features of the figure with minimal tools and the simplicity of primitive carvings.
